Robbinston Planning Board Issues Two Permits to Downeast LNG Project |

ROBBINSTON, Maine - Downeast LNG's plans to build an LNG import terminal in Washington County continue to move forward with the approval of two important local permit applications. Last Thursday, the Robbinston Planning Board unanimously (5-0) granted the project approvals under the town’s Shoreland
Zoning Ordinance and a Conditional Land Use Permit for the project’s main facility.
“Like the recent vote by the people of Robbinston to support our project by nearly a three-to-one margin, obtaining these approvals represents another first for an LNG project in New England,” said Downeast LNG president and founder Dean Girdis. “As we move into the all important Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) permit application and review process, it is extremely helpful to be able to demonstrate that the community is behind our project.”
According to Rob Wyatt, Downeast LNG vice president of environment and permitting, these approvals complete the initial permitting for the Town of Robbinston relative to the primary project site. Some additional permitting with the town may be necessary for sections of the pipeline that will connect the
Downeast LNG project to the Maritimes and Northeast natural gas pipeline at Baileyville, Wyatt said.
“I am extremely pleased with the momentum behind our project,” said Girdis. “In just seven months since announcing our plans for Robbinston and Washington County, we have received an overwhelmingly vote of support from townspeople, obtained to two important local permits and received acceptance of our preapplication to FERC.”
Girdis said that he attributes Downeast LNG.s success to this point to the experience of his development team, the many public meetings ands seminars Downeast LNG has held with area residents, the hard work of many local supporters, and an .open door. policy towards anyone with questions or concerns
about the project.
Downeast LNG is proposing to build a state of the art LNG import terminal at Mill Cove in Robbinston on an 80-acre site where the St. Croix River meets the Passamaquoddy Bay. The facility will consist of a single storage tank, processing equipment, a new pier and several small support buildings. The Robbinston site was selected by Downeast LNG after carefully researching and evaluating more than 25 different sites in New England and Maine. |
